Description

A single batch case of 2021 Ridgeback.

Representing a return to Gill Ridge  and made from unknown varieties of cooking and eating apples supplemented with fruit from Terrible Down Barn plus Michelin and Dabinet cider apples from Quarry Farm. The ratios worked out perfectly here to produce a delicious balance of crisp floral acidity with rich complex finish and a satisfying mouth feel.

We almost didn't make it to this orchard in 2021, it being a good year for apples. We swung by one lunchtime, following the long winding track up the ridge seemingly to the middle of nowhere. With nobody but the sheep to witness the work, we soon filled the truck with enormous cookers and left so much fruit behind it made us long for more time (and a bigger truck).

Orchard Notes

Terrible Down Barn
Possibly the site of a violent battle in the dark ages, certainly named after one. It may be associated with the battle of Lewes, but that is disputed. Perhaps more likely the name commemorates a terrible viking raid in which the land was stained red with the blood of defenders and attackers.

It's a less terrible spot these days situated just where the low weald meets the high. Sheltered by the south downs and drenched in sunshine and rain this orchard produces a great harvest most years, far more than Nigel and Jude can get through. We harvest the rest, each tree providing a different variety in a range of colours, sixes and flavours its a delightful orchard to harvest and regularly contributes to some of our favourite batches.

Quarry Farm, near Battle
The cider fruit used in this batch come from Sussex's only commercial grower of cider apples, Quarry Fram. Most of the fruit used to get sent to the west country but we now turn up to pick in the Autumn so some at least stays local - adding rich tannin depth and a long finish to our ciders. They have a farm shop with an excellent cafe, if you happen to be visiting nearby Bodium Castle.

Gill Ridge

Set on the ridge above Crowborough and overlookling boars head this small ex commercial orchard may once have been part of a much larger endeavour. Now two stands of trees remain, looked after by Sarah. One includes some of the largest cooking apples we've seen, the other dedicated to eaters. It's a quiet spot and we harvest under the gaze of curious sheep and horses.

Delivery Information

We ship orders on Tuesdays and Thursdays but please allow up to seven days for delivery once you have ordered. This is because we only work on the Bignose & Beardy part time as we have other jobs the rest of the week. Often we can get an order out quicker, but we can't guarantee it.

Deliveries must be signed for by a person aged 18 or over. Drivers operate a challenge 25 policy: if you appear under 25 you will be asked for photo ID.

If you live really nearby to us in postcode areas (TN22 1,2,4,5) we'll deliver to you for free. Just place your order and if your postcode qualifies free shipping will automatically be added to your order. If you end up paying for shipping by accident we'll refund the shipping and still deliver for free. What's not to love?!

Local customers, select the pick up option on check out to avoid paying delivery charges on this order. You can collect from the Cidery on Fridays or at other times by appointment.

We work with a neighbouring business to ship our goods (as they can get better prices than we can - being bigger than us). The shipping cost is based on the total weight of your order and is automatically calculated at checkout. We can ship most products (up to 20kg) for £10.00 to the UK. Some of our products are lighter and so cost less. It can make sense to add an item to your order to make the most of the shipping costs:
